The reception of First Eucharist takes place as part of the 2nd grade religious education program. In order to participate, the children must have already had a year of religious education or parrochial school education. We look forward to celebrating the sacrament of First Eucharist this year on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:30AM. Prior to this date, there are a few requirements that must be met in order for first communicants to be able to receive the sacrament.
In addition to the schedule, there are other expectations that are part of every Catholic sacramental formation program, including our own:
MASS ATTENDANCE: Because your children will be participating fully in the Eucharist for the first time, they should be familiar with praying together with the Church community and understand that Communion is part of the whole celebration of the Mass. Because of this, all students preparing for First Eucharist must attend Mass every Sunday and holy day of obligation, just as every Catholic does. Jesus Christ established the Eucharist at the Last Supper, and as St. Paul explained in his first letter to the Corinthians, this is how the Church continues to celebrate the Mass as the vital way of experiencing Christ and learning and sharing our faith. Our weekend Mass times at Transfiguration are Saturday at 5:00pm and Sunday at 8:00am, 10:00am, and 12:00pm. Please join us for worship.
PAPER WORK: Please send a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate to our religious education office. You may drop off a hard copy to our parish office, or you may e-mail a scanned or photo copy to [email protected]. Please make sure that whatever copy you send is legible. We require this information in order to forward your child’s First Eucharist information to your child’s church of baptism, where all of their sacramental records are also maintained. We ask for a copy of the baptismal certificate to ensure that we are sending the information to the correct church.
DRESS CODE: Please remember that this is a festive and formal occasion in which your child is receiving Christ for the first time in the Eucharist together with the rest of the Church, so please ensure that everyone dresses appropriately. Traditionally, girl communicants wear white dresses with white veils and dress shoes; whereas boy communicants usually wear dark suits, preferably blue, with ties with dark dress shoes. Please keep jewelry to a minimum and do not include gloves or pocketbooks, as these become a distraction to the children during Mass.
